Frequently Asked Questions
How much food should I prepare for 50 guests?
It depends on whether you are serving appetizers, a buffet, or a plated meal. Start with the calculator’s portion estimates and adjust for the event length and number of dishes.
Do buffet guests eat more than plated-meal guests?
Buffets can require a larger buffer because guests choose their own portions. Multiple substantial dishes may reduce the amount needed of each individual item.
How much extra food should I plan?
A 5% to 15% buffer is a reasonable planning range for many events, but the right amount depends on attendance certainty and the menu.
Can I use the results for children?
Yes, but consider smaller portions for younger children rather than counting every child as a full adult serving.
How much catering food should you order?
Start with the number of people expected to eat and your caterer’s actual serving sizes. A full-meal event generally needs more entrée and side portions than a light reception. This calculator uses editable planning assumptions, not official restaurant portion recommendations.
How the calculator works
For full meals, the starting estimate is one main portion, one side serving, two appetizer pieces, one dessert and 1.5 drinks per guest. For light meals or snack-only events, the entrée and side assumptions are reduced. An optional 10% or 20% allowance adjusts quantities upward. Main-dish trays are estimated using the tray capacity you enter.
Tips for planning group catering
- Use the caterer’s published tray yields when available.
- Account for dietary restrictions and guests who may skip certain dishes.
- For buffet events, monitor portions and ask your caterer for advice.
- Confirm whether children require smaller portions.
- For hot or perishable foods, follow food-safety holding and storage guidance.
Frequently asked questions
How many trays do I need for 50 people?
Divide the required entrée portions by the number of servings per tray and round up. If each tray serves 10 and you need 55 portions, order six trays.
Should I order extra catering food?
A small buffer can help if attendance or appetite is uncertain, but the right allowance depends on the menu and serving style. Check with the caterer.
