Frequently Asked Questions
Should I calculate a restaurant tip before or after tax?
Many diners calculate tips on the pre-tax subtotal, although practices vary. Use the base you prefer and follow any local expectations.
How do I split a bill evenly?
Add the meal total, tax, and tip, then divide by the number of diners. For different individual orders, use our itemized bill split calculator.
Does the calculator include automatic gratuity?
Check the restaurant receipt for service charges or automatic gratuity before adding another tip to avoid unintentionally tipping twice.
How can I split a bill when everyone ordered different amounts?
Use the itemized restaurant bill split calculator to assign food subtotals and allocate shared tax and tip proportionally.
How to calculate a restaurant tip
Use this formula: Tip = Tipping base × (Tip percentage ÷ 100). For example, an 18% tip on an $85 pre-tax bill is $15.30. If sales tax is $7, the total is $107.30. Split equally among three diners, that’s approximately $35.77 each.

| $150 | $22.50 | $27.00 | $30.00 |
Should you tip before or after tax?
Many diners calculate a percentage on the pre-tax food and beverage subtotal, while others choose the after-tax amount. Our calculator supports either approach. Check your receipt for automatic gratuity or service charges before adding another tip.
How to split a restaurant bill fairly
For an equal split, divide the bill plus tax and tip by the number of diners. If people ordered very different amounts, calculate each person’s food and drink subtotal separately and allocate tax and tip according to the group’s agreement. This tool is designed for equal splits.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a 20% tip on $50?
A 20% tip on $50 is $10. Add tax separately to find the final bill.
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
Customs differ by country, service type and circumstances. In the United States, many sit-down diners use percentages such as 15%, 18% or 20% as starting points, but gratuity is subject to applicable rules and personal judgment.
Does the calculator include sales tax?
Yes. Enter tax as a dollar amount. The calculator adds it to the final total and lets you decide whether to include it in the tip calculation.
Does it account for automatic gratuity?
No separate automatic-gratuity field is included. If a mandatory gratuity is already on your check, account for it before calculating any additional tip to avoid double counting.
Can I split a bill between five people?
Yes. Enter 5 in the number-of-people field. The calculator shows an equal per-person estimate.
